You’ve probably heard about green coffee extract on T.V. or from a friend. Several famous doctors have been spreading the word recently about the surprising weight loss results that many people are getting.
Perhaps you have a weight problem that you just can’t seem to budge. And to make matters worse, your physician has told you that you must change or risk some serious illnesses. But you tried all the fad diets and “insane” workouts around, and basically it’s just too difficult to stick to, takes too long, and frankly, you don’t have the time…
Basically green coffee beans is unroasted coffee in its raw form. Normally, coffee beans out of the pod are roasted at 475F to achieve the brown color and delicious taste, but obviously this also affects the inner structure of the bean.
Do Green Coffee Supplements Actually Work?
Because green coffee does not undergo the roasting process, the chlorogenic acid in the green coffee bean is untouched, and that’s the ingredient that offers the weight loss benefit. Green coffee also contains antioxidants that may also help against premature aging. In addition, it has been shown to help prevent diabetes and hypertension.
Several noted studies have demonstrated the weight loss effects of green coffee. One 2012 study published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity showed that the obese test subjects lost an average of 18 pounds in just 12 weeks. Another study conducted by the Dr. Oz show involved a hundred test subjects who were also instructed to use a food journal. They were also asked not to change their regular diet.
The results showed that taking green coffee and jotting down meal details in a food journal resulted in a loss of a pound per week—which is twice the weight loss for those only using a food journal.
It should be noted that some companies have been known to use artificial fillers and binders in their pills to save money. Therefore you must take a supplement which contains at least 45% Chlorogenic Acid, or GCA (green coffee antioxidant), in order get an effective dosage and avoid harmful side effects that can come from fillers.
Does Green Coffee Have Too Much Caffeine In?
With such a long and impressive list of benefits, it’s natural if you wonder about the side effects. After all, there has to be some potential side effects that balance out all the good things that green coffee offers, right? In both studies, there were no side effects reported at all. There were no reports of any symptoms associated from drinking too much coffee. But is it possible?
For example, many doctors warn about the potential dangers of caffeine. If you are a coffee drinker, then you know that coffee can really wake you up because of the caffeine it contains. And when you drink too much coffee, it can make you jittery. It can prevent you from sleeping normally and you then have to deal with insomnia.
It can even elevate your heart rate and that has some serious implications for your cardiovascular system.
But this doesn’t really apply to pure green coffee pills at all. A person has to drink numerous cups of coffee in a day to make all these potential side effects possible or even likely. With green coffee supplements, it’s virtually impossible. The symptoms from too much caffeine are not among of the green coffee bean extract side effects.
A regular cup of coffee made from roasted coffee beans has more than 100 mg of caffeine per serving. With some special cups of coffee such as those made from a “venti drip”, the caffeine level can reach as much as 400 mg. But a serving of green coffee contains just 20 mg of caffeine. That means you have to take as much as five times the number of the cups of coffee you take to get to that same level. And that is plainly beyond the recommended dosage.
Who Is Green Coffee Extract NOT Safe For?
So what are the possible dangers? Like just about any medication or supplement, there are some possible risks:
- You may be allergic to coffee beans or to caffeine. This is extremely rare, but it is possible. People who are allergic to coffee can show symptoms such as hives and breathing difficulties. If you also can’t drink soda or tea, then you are allergic to the caffeine. If you can’t drink decaffeinated coffee, then you’re allergic to the coffee itself.
Either way, obviously you cannot take green coffee supplements.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take pure green coffee extract. Most reputable green coffee supplement manufacturers have a warning to this effect on their websites and on their products. It is not because green coffee supplements have been proven to be dangerous for women in these conditions. It’s a reasonable precaution because there has not been enough conclusive data from studies involving these types of women, to discount the possibility.
In fact, any type of medication or health supplement can be dangerous for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Any new medication or supplement (or even a food item added to the diet) must first be discussed with the doctor before a woman in this condition consumes them.
- Children should also refrain from consuming green coffee supplements. Children need lots of energy, but caffeine—even the little amount found in green coffee servings—may not be good for them. Some parents allow their children to drink massive amounts of soda (which does contain caffeine), but just about every health care professional will state that this is an extremely unhealthy option. In fact, drinking copious amounts of soda is one of the leading causes of obesity.
- People who are on medication for serious ailments such as heart disease or diabetes should also avoid green coffee capsules. Again, this advice applies to all types of supplements or medicines. You need to discuss the matter with your doctor first if you want to take green coffee capsules while you’re on meds. Your doctor must explicitly give you the green light before you proceed.
